“Open Port” blazing the recovery trail

With the dramatic year 2020 just around the corner, Livorno, Piombino, the ports of Elba and Capraia, are trying to get back on their feet and reaffirm their centrality within their regional contexts. What better tool than the “Open Port” project for achieving this goal? The Port Authority’s project, now in its fifteenth edition, is now getting ready for a season that promises to be decisive for the North Tyrrhenian ports

The new edition, which follows the school year calendar, has entailed rethinking and reshaping its event package, completely free-of- charge, as always, according to the trend of the epidemic and its corresponding containment measures.

There are various initiatives on the calendar and to participate, you have to register. The deadline for this is November 19th, 2021. However, the activities will begin on November 3rd.

From October 2021 to January 2022, the Port Network Authority will continue to work on and promote the Port Center video library project (videos, short films, photo loops) with multimedia content related to the areas and activities of the ports under the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority’s jusrisdiction. In addition, there will be video lectures and classroom lessons, as well as tours of the port areas (on foot in open areas and on coaches). One of the novelties of this edition is the guided tour of Livorno’s reconverted grain silo in collaboration with Porto Immobiliare S.r.l. (a real estate company promoting tourism and culture – Translator’s note) – by the Associazione Guide Labroniche (Livorno’s tourist guide association – Translator’s note), which will be available from November.

TV events

Some television events will also be produced by the local tv channel TeleGranducato, in which only one class from a secondary school can participate.

Guided Tours

Visits to our Network ports will start again in January 2022 and  will continue through to  to May 2022. The visits will be  scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and can be organized according to suit specific educational inputs from teachers (estimated time for the visit: 1 hour). The groups must necessarily be small, in compliance with current legislation for containing the pandemic and equipped with the necessary protection (masks).

Visits to the port of Livorno will be by coach made available free of charge to the schools in the local area. They will take place on Wednesdays, starting from Wednesday, November 3rd , 2021 until Wednesday, May 11th , 2022, at the following times: 9.00am-11.00am-2pm (the time slot for pre-school children is at 2pm).  The duration of the visit is 1 hour and 45 minutes, including transfers; for infants’ schools, the tour takes about 1 hour and a quarter.

Visits to the Port Center and more

From January 2022 onwards, visits to the Port Center will also include the Historic Boats Exhibition at Livorno port’s former railway warehouse, 5 minutes walking distance from the Old Fortress.

For those opting for the entire educational-museum package (Port Center + Historical Boats), the duration of the visit will be extended by at least one hour.  Our objective has been to set up a mixed learning program, partially simulated, partially on-site, which, starting from the Port Center and its website, allows students to discover and improve their knowledge of port-related themes.

Other ports

Visits to the ports of Piombino, Portoferraio, Rio Marina, Cavo and Capraia can be planned in specific ways. The Port Authority will offer a free bus service in  Piombino with  professional tour guides, but not transfers by bus/ferry outside the town.

Please note that the Port Authority works in collaboration with  the Cooperativa Itinera based in Livorno when organizing the project initiatives. Bookings will be handled directly by Itinera:
