The port of Livorno looks out over the Tyrrhenian Sea, in Italy. Its geographical and morphological characteristics give it a strategic role in the centre of the Western Mediterranean.
The new port network is one of the leading national hubs for multipurpose cargo. It’s a natural logistics node for Tuscany, handling over 44 million tonnes of goods and 9 million passengers a year.
Livorno has been developing its container traffic since the 1980s. It is the main Italian port for forestry products, new cars and one of the most important for Ro-Ro traffic.
The port of Livorno is now pursuing a major sea expansion project: the Piattaforma Europa (or “Europe Platform”). Conceived and designed to accommodate mega ships, it will offer 3 km of quays, 2 large terminals, 2 million square metres of new areas and a new harbour entrance with depths of up to -20°.
The new port infrastructure will be developed in two phases. In the first phase the new container terminal will be built, while the second phase will be dedicated to the motorways-of-the-sea and Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax traffic.
