When containerization is faced with a crisis of vast proportions, it seems that the basic elements of this type of maritime transport change accordingly; not that the crisis itself is responsible for the change but, of course, it somehow accelerates a trend that has already been going on for some time.

The current Covid-19 pandemic is the third crisis which, in the new millennium, may bring about fundamental changes in this sector: a reading of the crises in the two previous decades may offer a useful perspective for understanding possible changes in the third decade.
