Livorno facing the mega-ship challenge

The remodeling of 35 meters of Livorno Port’s Pier 13 between the Marzocco Tower and the Darsena Petroli oil terminal has begun.

In fact, two days ago Sales’ floating platform ‘Francesca’ arrived, equipped with stabilizers. There is a large excavator on board equipped with a pneumatic hammer that will be used to demolish 35 meters of the pier. The demolition debris will then be removed using another floating pontoon equipped with a crane and transported to the designated location.

This is a preparatory step to the dredging of 80,000 cubic meters of sediment that will reshape the seabed to a depth of 13 meters over an area of about 24,000 square meters, with a further reprofiling of the harbour access channel to the Darsena Toscana dock to cater for container ships of up to 11.000 TEUs.

The work, commissioned to the Sales company, will have a total cost of 100,000 euros, while the amount foreseen for the dredging is around 1.2 million euros.

“This is a small but very important operation for the safety of shipping in the area leading to the commercial port and improving our port’s capacity to accommodate larger vessels” – said the President of the Port Network Authority, Stefano Corsini, attending the work commencement ceremony – “While waiting for the Darsena Europa facility to be completed, for years now our priority has been working on preserving and increasing the port’s competitiveness by improving, as much as is possible, its performance in terms of accessibility.”
