The ports on the island of Elba closed the first quarter of 2020 with a total throughput of 333,824 tons, down 12 % compared to the same period in 2019.
The data, which were issued today by the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority, in the new “Covid-192 Observer” section of our website, refer to ro-ro traffic, the only type of goods handled by the ports of Portoferraio, Rio Marina and Cavo, and relate exclusively to the transport of commercial vehicles on the sea leg connecting Piombino and the Island of Pianosa.
The ro-ro sector saw a drop in traffic, with 16,107 units compared to 17,718 in the corresponding period of 2019. In percentage terms it was down 9.1%.
Like Piombino, the months of January and February closed positively. The quarterly traffic performance was therefore affected by the results for March, where the fall in traffic was almost 40% with volumes almost halved compared to last year. In the first two months 2020 the number of commercial vehicles handled by Elban ports had in fact increased by 12,8% compared to January/February 2019.
In the first quarter of 2020, 207,096 passengers were disembarked/embarked, a decrease of 25% compared to the same period of 2019 and 70 thousand people less. However, the first two months of the year closed positively with almost 16 thousand more passengers than in January and February 2019 (+10%). A gloomy March, therefore, also for pax traffic, mainly due to the measures adopted by the Government to limit mobility: the third month of the year closed with a nosedive: over 85 thousand fewer passengers and a percentage drop of 75.5%.
